HILLSVILLE, VA — A Carroll County Sheriff’s deputy was killed in a late-night wreck with a tractor-trailer, according to multiple media reports.

While attempts to reach officials were not successful, other media outlets cite Virginia State Police as confirming the fatal crash on U.S. 58 near the Interstate 77-ramp.

As of 1:40 a.m., major road closures were in place as cleanup and an investigation into the crash were underway.U.S. 58 traffic, both north and south, were being detoured around the road, forcing motorists to drive miles around the wreck scene. The Interstate 77 entrance and exit ramps at mile marker 14 were closed in both directions.

Road closures were expected to last into the morning commute time.
