Sydney Nester struck out 15 and opened the postseason with a no-hitter Tuesday as Carroll County defeated Pulaski County 7-0 in a Conference 24 Softball Semifinal in Hillsville.
Nester came within a dropped third strike of the second perfect game of her career. She retired the first 16 batters she faced before Hollie Eggleston reached on a dropped third strike with one out in the sixth inning.
Carroll County (20-0) took the lead for good in the first inning as Kyndall Hiatt and Gracie Davidson led off with back-to-back singles and Sydney Nester walked to load the bases. Hiatt later scored on a pickle play to put the Cavaliers in front 1-0.
Hiatt made it 3-0 Carroll in the second inning with a two-run double to center to score Jeannie Utt and Morgan Tompkins. Alexis Meredith’s two-run single in the third plated Emily Cook and Tompkins for a 5-0 Cavalier advantage. Hiatt added an RBI double in the fifth and Katie McKenzie singled and scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Hiatt went 3-for-5 with a run and 3 RBIs to lead Carroll County. Meredith went 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs, while Davidson and Tompkins both added two hits. Tompkins also scored three runs for the Cavs.
With the win, Carroll advanced to Wednesday’s Conference 24 Championship game against William Byrd. The game is scheduled to be played at 6 p.m. on May 25 in Hillsville.
