Welcome to America 2016 – AKA Bizarro World

By Allen Worrell - Carroll News Editor

The sad state of affairs in this country has left me with one simple conclusion – America has officially turned into an episode of Seinfeld.

With each passing day and every new mind-numbingly stupid idea that is introduced, it makes me realize we are now living in Bizarro World. Much like in the 1996 Seinfeld episode, “The Bizarro Jerry,” it seems we are trapped in an alternate universe where up is down; down is up; hello means goodbye and goodbye means hello. To me that is the only way to make sense of a world that no longer makes sense.

How else can you explain a country where your gender is now only a suggestion for which bathroom you use? Or a state where violent felons now have the same rights as law-abiding citizens? Or a nation where cops are villains and criminals are victims? I don’t think there is any other explanation. America is now Bizarro World.

House Bill-2, also known as the “bathroom bill,” was approved and signed into law recently by North Carolina state lawmakers. It came in response to a law passed in Charlotte that allowed transgender persons to use restroom facilities of the sex with which they identified. That law prompted much concern about the possibility of abuse by sexual perverts or others using it to gain unintended access to restrooms normally forbidden to them. Well, duh! Hello McFly. Anybody home?

Since that time, national chain store Target has stated the company welcomes “transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.” Under that definition, there really is no need to have a men’s or women’s bathroom. In that scenario, how do you police a straight male with bad intentions from going into the women’s restroom and waiting for the perfect moment to strike against a young girl – all under the guise of being transgender?

The answer to that is you can’t. Granted, a person with such evil intent is not going to be stopped by the simple barrier of a women’s restroom. That’s a fact that unfortunately is proven day in and day out in America.

It’s very similar to the gun control argument. Laws to limit access to guns won’t stop a criminal from obtaining one, just as it won’t keep an evil person from using that gun to commit a crime. Yet, while that same liberal agenda seeks to limit access to guns, it has no problem with easing restraints for sexual predators with these new ill-conceived bathroom policies.

Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against the LGBT community or equal rights. That’s not what this is about. It’s about providing and maintaining safety for the most vulnerable portion of our population – women and children. The Target definition for restrooms and fitting rooms unfortunately is way too ambiguous. And it WILL be used the wrong way by somebody at some point in time. Some people call that fear mongering. I call that common sense – the thing that no longer exists in Bizarro World.

The backlash to HB2 in North Carolina has been quite comical. Within days of the law’s approval, the corporation PayPal made it known they would no longer be coming to Charlotte because of HB2, saying in a company memorandum, “The new law perpetuates discrimination and it violates the values and principles that are at the core of PayPal’s mission and culture.”

Quite an interesting little anecdote from a company that does business in 25 countries where homosexuality is illegal. It’s punishable by death in five of those countries, but who’s counting, right PayPal?

Which brings me to Virginia Governor, or should I say Veto King, Terry McAuliffe. A man who constantly strikes down all bills that don’t fit his own agenda, McAuliffe has one-upped himself by personally taking it upon himself to restore voting rights to more than 200,000 felons in the state of Virginia.

As long as a felon has served his or her prison time and finished parole or probation, that convicted criminal can now vote in the Commonwealth. It doesn’t matter if that person raped, killed or maimed, as long as the felon meets those requirements, that felon can now vote in Virginia.

The timing, just months before the presidential election in a major swing state, is quite ironic. But hey, when you are a self-proclaimed friend and supporter of Hillary Clinton, you do what you have to, right? After all, a presidential candidate still under FBI investigation most certainly isn’t going to turn away 200,000 votes just because they are from convicted felons.

But I digress. I just wish McAuliffe would look into something beneficial to something besides him or his political party. All it would take is one signature from his pen to keep the Southwestern Virginia Training Center in Carroll County from its state-mandated closing in 2018. But the Governor seems disinterested in even engaging in conversation about the subject. But hey, why bother ourselves with those who can’t help themselves when there is an opportunity to help an ex-convict?

By the same token, what has happened to the world when a gun-wielding criminal’s death at the hands of the police is a national travesty that warrants riots, weeks of media coverage and the presence of the president? At the same time, a Marine’s death at the hands of ISIS, such was the case last Tuesday, barely registers a blip on the national radar.

Like a Seinfeld episode, none of it makes any sense. At least Seinfeld delivered a few laughs along the way, was finished in 30 minutes, and was made up. Unfortunately, the Bizarro World we know as America is all too real.
