CANA — One person is reported dead in connection with a Friday night fire in the Paul’s Creek Road area of Cana. According to Cana Volunteer Fire Department Chief Richard Sowers, the call for the blaze was received around 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 13.
Sowers said firefighters arriving on the scene observed flames coming from the roof on the back side of the single-story, frame house. Other units assisting included Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department, Franklin Volunteer Fire Department (N.C.) and Cana Rescue Squad. He estimated the fire was brought under control in almost 20 minutes. According to officials, the home was heavily damaged by the fire.
An investigation of the incident is being conducted by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department and the Virginia Department of State Police, Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner said. The name of the male victim has not been released by authorities pending official identification of the victim from the State Medical Examiner, however Hillsville Fire Chief Donnie Spangler said the property owner of the residence, Robert Jones, has not been accounted for.
“We do know he is the only occupant of the residence, but the Medical Examiner has to confirm it through DNA testing and that will take some time,” Spangler said. “The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation, but it doesn’t look like anything suspicious.”
