The Hillsville Police Department has charged three and issued an arrest warrant for another in connection to reports concerning stolen chainsaws from Asplundh trucks.

According to a news release from HPD, reports of the thefts were received on Sept. 21. The trucks were parked at Bert’s Garage and at the Exxon Station off Interstate 77’s Exit 14 in Hillsville.

Sgt. Alan Gravley responded to the report from Bert’s while Officer Ricky Hayes responded to the Exxon Station incident. Upon completing the incident reports, Gravley and Hayes watched surveillance video from both locations and together were able to identify the vehicle used in the larcenies, Hillsville Police Chief Wesley Yonce said.

Upon attempting to talk with the vehicle’s owner, identified as Stephen Wayne Cole, he led police on a short foot pursuit. The Hillsville Police Department was assisted by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police in apprehending Cole at the Hickory Hill Shopping Center, Yonce said.

Following an interview with Cole, Gravley and Hayes recovered all property stolen from the trucks and Investigator C. Edwards was able to obtain information on other larcenies in Carroll County. Cole has been charged with two counts of grand larceny.

Two subjects identified by authorities as Mark Bobbitt and Donald Burcham have been arrested and charged with possession of stolen property, Yonce said. Arrest warrants have also been put on file for Rhonda McCoy, who has yet to be located by authorities.

Police ask that anyone with any information on McCoy’s whereabouts contact either the Hillsville Police Department at 276-728-2251 or the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office at 276-730-3020 or 276-728-4146.
