The Virginia State Police is investigating an accident involving a motorcycle and a pick-up truck Thursday that resulting in one man being airlifted from Fancy Gap Elementary School.
According to Virginia State Police Trooper P.K. Cheek, the accident occurred Thursday at approximately 6:20 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 52 and Greenberry Road. Cheek said Terry Caldwell, 55, of Hillsville, was driving a 1994 Harley Davidson motorcycle southbound on U.S. 52 when he crossed the double solid line and struck a 2012 Nissan Frontier pickup truck driven by John Thomas Utt, 62, of Hillsville.
Cheek said Utt was uninjured from the crash, but Caldwell suffered serious injuries. The Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department and Carroll County EMS responded to the scene, along with Virginia State Police Sgt. Todd. A landing zone was set up at Fancy Gap Elementary School and Caldwell was airlifted from there to a regional hospital. Cheek said while Caldwell’s injuries were serious, he didn’t believe they were life threatening.
Caldwell’s motorcycle was totaled, while damages to Utt’s truck were estimated between $4,000 and $5,000, Cheek said. The Trooper said Utt told him he got over as much as he could, with his vehicle partially in Greenberry Road, to avoid the motorcycle.
Cheek said charges are pending in the ongoing investigation.
