Pedestrian airlifted after being struck by vehicle

A pedestrian was airlifted after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of U.S. 52 and U.S. 58 on the night of Sept. 17 in Hillsville.

According to the Hillsville Police Department, the accident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. at the main stop light in Hillsville. HPD Officer Austin Atkins arrived on scene and found John Robert Barker, 71, of Hillsville, injured. The driver, Regina Hinson Fargnoli, 55, of Wilmington, N.C., told police she was traveling northbound on U.S. 52 and turned left on Route 58 westbound headed in the direction of the Hillsville VFW when she struck Barker. Fargnoli was driving a GMC Sierra pickup truck.

According to the police report, Barker was transported by ambulance to Northern Surry Hospital in Mount Airy, N.C. before being airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. The extent of Barker’s injuries were unknown as of press time.

Atkins charged Fargnoli with failure to yield for a pedestrian. The police report listed minor damage to the driver’s side front portion of the pickup.
