Carroll County declares local emergency

HILLSVILLE – Carroll County has declared a Local Emergency effective 12:00 P.M. September 15, 2018, in response to forecasted extreme weather conditions in our region as a result of Tropical Storm Florence.

This DECLARATION OF EMERGENCY is made in accordance with Section 44-146.21 of the Code of Virginia and activates the local Emergency Operations Plan.

Carroll County will receive significant rainfall Saturday evening through Monday. At times, the rain could be extreme, causing flash flooding, downed trees, and power outages. We are prepared to open shelters as necessary in various locations throughout the county.

“We are urging citizens to stay alert for changing conditions and monitor local news outlets as well as social media, the county website, and Nixle alerts for announcements of shelter status and locations,” Carroll County stated in a press release. “A shelter is currently open at the VFW in Hillsville if anyone is in need of sheltering at this time. If anyone requires transportation to a shelter, it can be provided. Please call the Emergency Operations Center at 276-730-2999 if you have questions or concerns. Reserve calling 911 for emergencies only.”
