Carroll County’s state-winning fair begins Aug. 22

Voted the best fair in the entire state of Virginia each of the past two years, the award-winning Carroll County Agricultural Fair will return to Hillsville from August 22-26 on the grounds of the Southwest Virginia Farmers’ Market.

The 2016 and 2017 editions of the Carroll County Ag Fair were voted “Best in State” for all fairs and all divisions and took home 20 awards last year. This year’s fair begins Wednesday, August 22 with an opening ceremony from 4:30-5:30 p.m. The opening ceremony will also feature a ribbon cutting with a fair parade that will include the Carroll County High School Band, the 2018 Miss Carroll County Fair Pageant winners, antique tractors and more.

The CCHS Band will perform at the Arena Area starting at 5:30 following opening ceremonies. There will be carnival rides and the barnyard that night from 5-10 p.m. There will be a youth dairy show beginning at 6:30 p.m., followed by a youth beef cattle show. The Hillbilly Pig Races are back this year from 7 and 8 p.m. on Aug. 22.

Fair activities begin Aug. 23 with a Stockman’s Contest (Jr./Sr.) at 10 a.m. Again, the carnival rides and barnyard will be available from 5-10 p.m. New this year will be a Farm Team Tennis Ball (Horse) Pull Event. Poultry Show and Rabbit Show judging will start around 6 p.m. and an Invitation-Only Swine Show is set for 7 p.m. Hillbilly Pig Races will be featured again at 7 and 8 p.m.

On Friday, Aug. 24, carnival ride hours will be extended from 5-11 p.m. A Youth Meat and Dairy Goat Show will be held at 6 p.m. Recipe Contest check-in is from 6-6:50 p.m. with judging starting at 7 p.m. A sanctioned lawnmower race will begin at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Aug. 25, carnival ride hours will be from 12-11 p.m. There will be a Drug Dog Demonstration at 11 a.m. and a Youth Market Lamb Show at 11:30 a.m. Forestry Events take place at noon. Hillbilly Pig Races will be held at 11:30 a.m., 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 p.m.

Local Authors will make presentations at “mid-day,” on Saturday. Also that day, 4-H Tent – Family Fun Games will be held from 12-7 p.m. There will be pet shows from 2-3 p.m. (Teens/Adults) and 3-4 p.m. (children 15 and under). A Storytelling Contest begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday with registration from 5:30-6 p.m. A Horse Pull will be held at 7 p.m., while music groups will perform from 6:30-10 p.m. Musical groups that will be performing Saturday will be Wings of Salvation at 4 p.m., Cox Brothers at 6:30 p.m. and Josh Burton at 9 p.m.

The Carroll County Ag Fair will conclude Sunday, Aug. 26 after activities from 12-6 p.m. that day. Carnival rides will be held from 1-6 p.m. At 3 p.m. there will be a Coon Dog Bench and Treeing Contest and as well All-Star Wrestling.

The Carroll County fair site is located near the intersection of I-77/U.S. 58, Exit 14.
