Those wanting the best of both worlds have a chance to combine Christmas spirit with Summer during Lake Ridge RV Resort’s “Christmas In July” activities.
“This year’s is larger and improved. (Manager) Glenn Current is trying continually to improve all the activities,” said Cabin Owner Ann Hall. “This is all part of the month of July celebration at Lake Ridge. They’ll decorate everything. I even won on the best decorated golf cart one year.”
Displays range from Christ in the Manger scenes, Snoopy and Woodstock and Santa-Land. Hall said there is also a “Best Decorated Camper or Cabin” competition and a Christmas parade. (Typically this is held for three weeks with the event opening last week.)
“We have a pool, water slides, mini golf and fishing and a lot more open to the public as well as campers. During the season they plan crafts and games for all the campers,” Hall said. “On nights and weekends we’ve started having live music, karaoke and we have a big movie screen on the side of the hill.”
She said Maintenance Manager Virgil McMickle has provided all the displays as well. Hall said locals may come in and listen to the bands on Saturday nights, free of charge.
“A lot of the locals who have heard about it come in just for the bands. We have the picnic tables set up and a stage,” said Hall. “It’s a wonderful place to come for relaxation for most anyone, in my opinion. We also have carolers every night. We go around caroling with carolers on golf carts. About ten line up, put their radios in the carts and ride around playing them.”
Vintage automobiles typically join the parade during the Christmas in July weeks. Hall said she came from the Richmond area. After she retired, she bought a home in Fries and bought a little cabin at Lake Ridge for her grandson (Kayden Worrell). She liked it so well she spends most of summer at Lake Ridge.
Hall said she considers the Resort as a well-kept secret, a recreational gem for Carroll County waiting for more local people to discover what it has to offer.
“When I came over here and saw everything they had, it made me want to share it with other people,” Hall said. “I love it so. I want people to come in and enjoy what I do. Once you are in here, you come back. We have almost the same people return every year. It feels like family because people are so friendly here. They love it. I think that’s what attracts people from all over the state to this campground. They feel welcome.”
Hall said most of the Christmas in July events are all free of charge to the general public, in the spirit of a Christmas present. Painting keepsake rocks which are hidden for others to find has also become popular at the Resort. She said fishing in the lake at the Resort is also good, noting there are even some large bass.
“It’s fun for the little kids. They get out and it’s just like hunting (Easter) eggs,” said Hall. “Then you put them in your flower garden. We have about anything you’d like like water slides, shuffle board, corn hole and miniature golf.”
She said she has enjoyed the transition to the slower lifestyle found locally, compared to the pace of her life when she was in business for herself in Prince Edward County.
