Included among the 105 indictments handed down Monday by a Carroll County Grand Jury were one indictment for first-degree murder in Galax and 12 more indictments for abduction among three people in a July home invastion.

Yashisca Dushawn Richardson Chapman, 39, of Roanoke was indicted for first-degree murder on Monday in the June 22 stabbing death of a Roanoke man. Galax Police Chief Rick Clark advised on June 22 at 10:27 p.m. members of the Galax Police Department responded to The Galax Motel located on East Stuart Drive in Galax. Officers responded to a report of an individual having been stabbed.

Responding officers discovered an unresponsive adult male suffering from multiple wounds. Attempts to revive him at the scene by paramedics were not successful. The victim was identified as Roland Eugene Clayton, Jr., 51, of Roanoke. Chapman was taken into custody by police officers Darren Alley and Adam Newman at the scene. At the time, Chapman was charged with First Degree Murder by Detective J.B. Greer.

In separate indictments, Michael David Owens, 20, of Oak Hollow Circle in Galax; Kacey Alec Reynolds, 18, of West Grayson St. in Hillsville; and Zaccheaus Nathaniel Jones-Frost, 18, of Rosemary Lane in Claudeville, all were indicted on four counts each of abduction in a July 5 home invasion in Carroll County in which a small child was held at gunpoint.

According to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office at the time, at approximately 11 p.m. on July 5, members of the department responded to a home on Pleasant View Road in Austinville to a report of a home invasion where several men had pointed guns at the victims. Lt. Tony Horton responded to the home and spoke with the owner, who advised that several armed, masked men came into their home looking for the victim’s son.

“The owner said that several of the men came in through the front door and several more positioned themselves at the back door,” Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner said in a press release. “The victim reported that one of the men put his hand over a child’s mouth and then placed a gun to the child’s head to get them to stop screaming.”

Gardner said the men asked for the location of the victim’s son, and were told of a possible location where he may be on Glendale Road, near the Galax city limits. The men took two cell phones from the home and left. The victim advised Lt. Horton that the men had not parked at the home and must have parked somewhere else in the community and walked in.

Deputies were dispatched to the Glendale Road area to attempt to locate the men and the next possible location. Deputies searching the Glendale Road area made contact with another victim who advised the deputies that the men had already been to their home, searched the house at gun point and left when they did not find who they were looking for.

“Lt. Horton was still in the Laurel area speaking to the first victim when a red car came by the house. The victim recognized the driver of the car as one of the people that had broken into their home,” Gardner said. “Lt. Horton pulled out behind the car and it pulled into a driveway, partially going over a small bank. Lt. Horton held the young men in the car and called for assistance. Lt. Bobby Lyons, Deputy Jake Worrell, Deputy Bradley Hoffman, Deputy Micah Brady and Cpl. Rocky Dalton arrived and all of the occupants were removed from the car. Deputies were able to recover two firearms and several knives from the men in the car, along with hoodies and bandanas. All six males in the car were arrested and brought back to the Sheriff’s Office.”

Gardner said three juveniles were also taken into custody before being charged and transported to juvenile detention.
