The 13th Annual Carroll County Agricultural Fair will get underway Wednesday, Aug. 23 and continue through Sunday, Aug. 27 on the grounds of the Southwest Virginia Farmers’ Market in Hillsville.
This year’s fair will offer several new features. Among those include a General Lee Exhibition Car (Sunday, Aug. 27 from 12-2 p.m.), Hillbilly Pig Races (Weds., Thurs., and Sat.), a Poultry Show Costume Contest, Poultry Showmanship, School Garden, and More 4-H Family Fun Games.
The gate admission fee includes ALL the events scheduled by the Carroll County Fair Committee, including unlimited carnival rides. The Carroll County Agricultural Fair was voted the #1 Small Fair in the State of Virginia last year by the Virginia Association of Fairs.
The Carroll County Ag Fair schedule is as follows: Events will be held Weds., Aug. 23 from 5-10 p.m. with carnival rides form 5-10 p.m. There will be a music jam session from 7-9 p.m., barnyard from 5-10 p.m., youth dairy show at 6:30 p.m., Hillbilly Pig Races at 7 and 8 p.m., youth beef cattle show (following the youth dairy show), demonstrations (located throughout the fairgrounds) and exhibit hall (first bay of the wholesale building).
Events on Thursday will also go from 5-10 p.m. with carnival rides held during the same hours. There will be a Stockman’s Contest at 10 a.m. at the livestock show tent. The barnyard will be located near the livestock show tent. Poultry Show will begin with judging after 6 p.m., rabbit show will begin with judging at 6 p.m., beauty pageant will be at 6 p.m., Hillbilly Pig Races at 7 and 8 p.m., and demonstrations and exhibit hall.
Carnival rides will be held from 5-11 p.m. on Fri., August 25. There will also be a barnyard, a youth meat and dairy goat show at 6 p.m., recipe contest (check-in 6-6:50 p.m., judging at 7 p.m.), storytelling (7:10-7:30 p.m.), exhibit hall, music with the Ethan Ayers Band (8 p.m.), and a sanctioned lawnmower race at 7:30 p.m.
Carnival rides will go from noon-11 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 26. There will be a drug dog demonstration at 11 a.m., a youth market lamb show at 11:30 a.m., forestry events at noon, Hillbilly Pig Races at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 pm. and 2:30 p.m., local authors at mid-day, pet show from 2-3 p.m. (teens and adults), storytelling (6 p.m. with registration from 5:30-6 p.m.), horse pull at 7 p.m., music groups featuring Josh Burton at 9 p.m. (from 6:30-10 p.m.), demonstrations and barnyard.
Carnivals rides will be held from 1-6 p.m. on Sun., Aug. 27. There will be a coon dog bench and treeing contest at 3 p.m., horse show at 12 p.m. (registration at 11 a.m.), wrestling all-stars at 3 p.m., and barnyard and exhibit hall.
The Carroll County fair site is located near the intersection of I-77/U.S. 58, exit 14.
