Hillsville residents were making a run for the border en masse Thursday as the new Taco Bell opened at 145 South Main Street.
Located just beyond the border of North and South Main Street in Hillsville in Food Lion shopping center, customers began bombarding the new eatery as soon as it opened for breakfast at 7 a.m. Thursday. Despite the long lines, the 40 new employees of the Hillsville restaurant were working furiously to get orders out in a timely fashion.
“We’re very pleased to be open here in Hillsville today. We’re very happy to be in Hillsville and be a part of the community,” said Joe Mangano, CEO of Burger Busters Inc., which operates franchisee organizations for Taco Bell in North America. “We are the most happy about being able to put 40 people to work today. Taco Bell is a great brand. We have great developers and the whole team is fantastic.”
Don Bell, District Manager for Taco Bell in the area, said business had been rock n’ rolling all day long Thursday at the new restaurant.
“Absolutely. It is a true blessing and I wouldn’t change anything at all,” said Bell, who got his start when the Galax Taco Bell opened approximately 25 years ago. “I know a lot of people up this way from the other store and it was good to see them today. It is good to be home.”
Bell said Wendy Harris will be the General Manager of the Hillsville Taco Bell. They both are from the area and are excited about opening a new location in Hillsville.
“We’re both from here and it’s really good to see things expand here. I believe in shopping and buying local,” Bell said. “I’m really glad to see some businesses coming into town.”
Already, the new restaurant was bringing people to Hillsville specifically just to eat. Rodney, Wanda and Janet Hall of Pipers Gap made the trek to Hillsville just to try the new Taco Bell.
“We’ve visited with them in Galax a lot and knew most of the people, so we wanted to come here and try it,” said Rodney Hall. “It’s good food.”
