Tractor-trailer crash on I-77 claims life of child

A Sunday night tractor-trailer accident on Interstate 77 has claimed the life of a child.

According to multiple media sources, a 3-year old Statesville, N.C. juvenile has died in connection with the two-vehicle crash, after being thrown from the vehicle in which he was riding.

Preliminary information attributed to the Virginia State Police indicates the two tractor-trailers were traveling north on I-77 around 10:45 p.m. when the two vehicles attempted to change lanes at the same time. It is reported a 1999 model tractor-trailer struck the rear of a 200o model tractor trailer in the vicinity of Mile Marker 2.

The driver of the 1999 tractor-trailer, who was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for treatment of what appeared to be serious injuries, was identified as Rashida N. Parks, 22 of Statesville, N.C. Her three-year old son, Vince, was transported to Northern Hospital of Mount Airy in Mount Airy, where he later died. Reportedly the child was not secured in a child safety seat and was ejected from the tractor-trailer during the crash.

Harry M. Shuler, 50, of South Carolina, was identified as the driver of the 2000 model tractor-trailer. He was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The crash remains under investigation and reportedly The Virginia State Police Motor Carrier Safety Team is assisting with the investigation.

Multiple attempts to reach the Virginia State Police for confirmation of the fatal wreck and additional information were not successful.
