Cana man charged in shooting

Staff Report

A Cana man faces several charges after allegedly shooting his wife in a domestic dispute January 4.

Carroll County Sheriff J. B. Gardner reported that on January 4 at 2:41 am, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a call from Northern Surry Hospital in Mount Airy, N.C. that they needed deputies to respond to their emergency room for a female with a gunshot wound.

According to Gardner, Investigator Brandon Edwards responded to the hospital and met with Penny Utt, 39, who told him that she and her husband had been at their home located at 2705 Meadowbrook Road in Cana, gotten into an argument and she was shot in the knee. Investigator Edwards was also able to speak with David Utt, 50, in the waiting area of the hospital.

“Investigator Edwards developed enough information to call back to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and speak with Lt. Donnie Spangler, who was then able to obtain a warrant for Mr. Utt for Malicious Wounding,” Gardner said. “Mr. Utt’s information was entered into NCIC and he was arrested by Mount Airy Police Deptartment on a fugitive from justice warrant. Mr. Utt was taken to the Surry County (N.C.) Jail and was taken before a magistrate and placed under a $300,000 bond.”

Mr. Utt was able to make bond in N.C. and was released to return to Virginia. Gardner said Mr. Utt turned himself into the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and was charged with malicious wounding, possession of a firearm while being a convicted felon, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and assault on a family member. Gardner said Mr. Utt was taken before a magistrate and is being held in the New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin without bond.
