Saltville man arrested for eluding law after bizarre event

A Saltville man has been arrested for eluding law enforcement officers after a bizarre series of events Wednesday morning in Hillsville.

According to Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call from a man who identified himself as Joey Roark. Roark told dispatch he had been involved in a motorcycle wreck on Interstate 81 at Exit 80, but that he did not want to go to the hospital. The caller asked that dispatch call his wife in Saltville and explain what had happened to him and that he would be in the Hillsville area at a friend’s house, and would return home on the next day.

“Roark told the dispatcher that he was at his friend’s house now, but they were not home and he was in their horse trailer,” Gardner said in a press release. “Dispatchers then asked him why he didn’t call his wife and he said his cell phone would not reach to Saltville. He further said that he did not want his wife to know where he was.”

Deputies determined that Roark was in the area of Island Creek Road in Hillsville and attempted to make contact. Units from the Sheriff’s Office, Hillsville Police Department and the Virginia State Police searched the area but did not locate Roark, Gardner said.

“Phone contact was made with Roark but he said that he did not need assistance, had several years of martial arts training and wanted them to leave him alone,” Garnder said. “Mr. Roark’s motorcycle was found in the area.”

At approximately 3:44 a.m., Deputy Eric Sain observed the motorcycle driving recklessly in the area of Route 100 and Route 221 in Hillsville. When Deputy Sain activated his emergency equipment, the motorcycle attempted to speed away.

“Deputy Sain advised dispatch that he was in pursuit of the motorcycle and it came into the town of Hillsville, went down Route 58 to the VFW in Hillsville and continued through the VFW parking lot, into the grass area,” Gardner said. “Deputies followed the motorcycle, the driver realized he was in a fenced in area and turned his motorcycle into Sgt. David Walls’ police vehicle.”

Joey Michael Roark, 53, of Ridgeview Road, Saltville, was taken into custody for Felony Elude Law Enforcement, Gardner said. Roark was transported to Twin County Regional Hospital, where he was treated and released and then brought before the magistrate. Gardner said Roark is being held in the New River Valley Regional Jail without bond.
