A North Carolina man has been charged with breaking and entering and damaging property after a pair of break-ins March 1 in Cana.

According to Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner, Sgt Justin Haga and Deputy Trevor Carico responded to a call on Horizon Drive in the Cana community of Carroll County on March 1 at 4:20 a.m. in reference to an individual who was out of control threatening the residents of a home with a hammer. Before deputies arrived, the suspect left the house on foot, and a search was started in an effort to locate the man.

“While deputies were searching the area, a second call came in at 5:32 a.m. from Emerald Lane in reference to an individual that had made entry into another residence, but once again had left on foot,” Gardner said in a press release. “Deputy Jarrett Combs was contacted to respond to the scene with his K9 “AYA” to try to track the individual, but shortly thereafter deputies located the man.”

Sgt. Haga and Deputy Carico arrested Brandon Lee Bauguess, 37, of Ararat, N.C., and charged him with breaking & entering and damaging property. Gardner said Bauguess was also charged with a felony failure to appear warrant from Carroll County courts. Bauguess is being held without bond in the New River Valley Regional Jail pending his arraignment in Carroll County General District Court.
