Carroll Countys Dixie League Angels are headed to the Virginia State Tournament after winning the district championship June 28. The Carroll County team swept through the Angels softball (ages 9-10) tournament at Fries with a pair of wins over Floyd County and another over Grayson County. By virtue of the district title, the Carroll team will travel to Farmville for the state tournament. The team is slated to play its opener July 9 at 2 p.m. Its really a good group of kids. We didnt have a whole lot of time to get prepared, but everybody has gelled together and the parents have been a big help scrambling around to get us prepared to go, said coach Stephen Dalton. Carroll opened the tournament with a 7-1 victory over Floyd County. Things starting to get tougher from that point, however, as the team had to rally in the final inning to edge Grayson 5-4. Carroll was down three runs in the championship game against Floyd before rallying for an 8-7 victory. Trailing 5-4 with the bases loaded, Chloe Easter cleared the bases to put Carroll up 8-5. Floyd scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the last inning before Carroll held on for the title. We gave up two runs in the bottom half of the inning and they had their number four hitter up with two outs and a runner on second. They hit probably the hardest hit ball of whole game, but it was a line drive to the second baseman, Dalton said. It was exciting. These girls are gritty. We had plenty of opportunities in the last two games. We were down in both of those games and fought back. They played to the end. With a state championship in Farmville, Carroll County would earn a berth in the Dixie Angels World Series in Mississippi.
