A number of emergency crews helped put out a small forest fire above the F&M Construction Corporation quarry on U.S. 52 North Thursday afternoon.

At about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, a motorist on Interstate 77 noticed smoke and contacted the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.

After receiving the call, several fire departments and the Department of Forestry responded and started getting to work putting the blaze — which started from embers of a brush fire.

A perimeter was set by the Blue Ridge Wildland Strike Team, which helped contain the fire and kept it from spreading. At 3 a.m., all emergency personnel were cleared from the scene. Nobody was injured while dealing with the blaze.

The VDOF estimated approximately 20 to 25 acres were destroyed in the blaze.

The Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department, Laurel Fork Volunteer Fire Department, Barren Springs Fire Department, Max Meadows Fire Department, Ivanhoe Fire Department, Wytheville Fire Department, Floyd County Fire Department, Pipers Gap Rescue Squad, Carroll County EMS and Cana Rescue Squad responded to the blaze.
