Richlands took advantage of nine Carroll County errors April 6 as all six of its runs were of the unearned variety in a 6-0 Southwest District win over the Cavaliers in Hillsville.

Carroll County (2-4, 1-2 SWD) had just as hard a time getting anything going at the plate as Evan Ferrell and Jordyn Cole combined to throw a one-hit shutout. The Cavaliers stranded four runners, including two at third base in the loss.

“I know we are a better team than what we showed. We’ve been doing it in practice, but right now we can’t do it in a game,” Carroll County head coach Terry Warf said. “The games we’ve lost, it’s been errors that’s cost us. We need to start hitting, but it doesn’t matter until we quit making so many errors.”

Ferrell struck out six and issued three walks in six innings of work for the Blue Tornadoes. The Richlands hurler only allowed one hit, an infield single to Danielle Spence in the second inning. Spence made it to third following her single before Ferrell worked her way out of the inning. Jordan Nunn also made it to third following a leadoff walk in the first before Ferrell again got through the inning unscathed. She also issued a walk each in the fifth and sixth innings without any damage on the scoreboard.

Richlands took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Micka Brady ripped a two-out triple. She scored after Megan Robinson reached on Carroll’s first error, a dropped fly ball.

The score stayed that way until the fourth, when Richlands took advantage of three more Cavalier fielding miscues. Bella Durham led off by reaching on error. She moved to second after a groundout and took third on a wild pitch. After Carolyn Weaver walked with two outs, Durham scored after Weaver stole second and the throw from home sailed into the outfield. Weaver also came all the way around after the errant throw to put the Blue Tornadoes up 3-0.

Richlands added three more unearned runs in the fifth after Brady reached on an error, then scored on Robinson’s RBI double to left field. Robinson and Morgan Hill also scored later in the inning following Carroll errors.

Cole set the Cavaliers done in order in the seventh to preserve the one-hit shutout. Spence singled and walked to lead Carroll at the plate.

Brady went 2-for-2 to lead Richlands.
