Carroll County senior Casey Lawson placed fourth overall in a cross country meet at Grayson County on Sept. 30.

With three runners in the top eight, Carroll County’s boys’ cross country team placed second in a cross county meet at Grayson County on Sept. 30.
Carroll County sophomore Kendall Haynes led the way for the Cavaliers, placing fourth on the 5,000-meter course with a time of 18:38. Teammate Wayne Bugh was right behind in fifth place with a time of 19:05, while Carroll’s Seth Webb crossed the finish line with the eighth-best time at 19:37. The Cavaliers placed two more runners in the top 20 as Travis King’s time of 21:10 was good enough for 18th and Bennie Bolen took 19th with a run of 21:29.
Galax won the four-team meet with a team score of 31. Carroll was second with a 46, followed by Grayson County (51) and Rural Retreat (106). Grayson County’s Jimmy Oliver crossed the finish line in 17:27 to win the event.
Also competing for the Cavaliers were Logan Utt (22:20), Alec Felts (23:10), Jon Robinson (23:52), Tyler Kimble (24:39) and Corey Jones (26:53).
Although the Cavaliers didn’t have enough runners to field a complete team, Carroll’s girls also fared well with three runners in the top six. Carroll senior Casey Lawson took fourth overall with a time of 23:06. Teammate Felicia Combs was right behind in fifth with a time of 23:29. Carroll freshman Elise Zyvloski took sixth with a run of 24:00.
Grayson County sophomore Carley Smith won the event with a time of 21:04.
Carroll County’s Austin Puckett had a big day in the middle school race, finishing second with a time of 13:59. Carroll’s Hayley Sellers came in 6th with a run of 16:30. They were followed by teammates Karissa Hayden (eighth with a time of 16:43) and Kymbre Robinson (11th with a time of 19:32).
