Six different Cavaliers scored touchdowns Thursday as Carroll County’s junior varsity football team hammered Grayson County 48-0 in Independence.

Carroll County (4-1) dominated the game from start to finish, taking a quick 6-0 lead as Dereck Surface hauled in a 10-yard touchdown reception from Josh Underwood on the Cavs’ opening drive. Kody Alley kept Carroll rolling with a touchdown on a sweep to the left side, while Logan Hodges ran in the 2-point conversion for an early 14-0 lead.

Grayson County (0-3) countered by driving down to the Carroll 5-yard line, but the Cavs stood firm in the red zone by forcing a turnover on downs. Carroll then took control with an impressive 8-play, 95-yard drive highlighted with big runs from Brooks Hash and Hodges. Josh Underwood capped the drive with a touchdown on a quarterback sneak. He also ran in the conversion for a 22-0 Cavalier lead at the end of the first half.

The Blue Devils fumbled on the opening possession of the third quarter and Carroll took advantage with some trickeration on the next play as Matthew Hawks tossed a 35-yard halfback pass for a touchdown to Tanner Reavis for a 28-0 lead. After losing a fumble on their next possession, Carroll struck again as Kody Alley broke loose for a 20-yard touchdown run. Hodges plunged in to score the 2-point conversion to increase the Cavalier advantage to 36-0.

By virtue of the 36-point deficit, the rest of the game was played with a continuous running clock. Travis Hunter again led the Cavaliers down the field after relieving Underwood at quarterback. Hunter directed the team on a 10-play drive and plunged in from the one after big gains by Brady Guy, Hawks and Jake Dillon. Hunter’s touchdown put the Cavaliers ahead 42-0. Carroll added six more on Hawks’ 54-yard touchdown scamper.

“I was really happy for the whole team. We were again missing two players and other players stepped in and did outstanding jobs tonight,” Carroll County JV coach Mark Harmon said. “Graham Matthews, Dillon Burcham and Jake Dillon did an excellent job filling as linebackers. Brady Guy and Josh Underwood had some great open-field tackles. Dominic Sotile did a good job plugging up the middle along with the rest of our defensive tackles. We had a good rotation of 12 tackles to keep everyone fresh.”

Harmon said the team continues to improve each game, but still has a lot of work to do with five games left over the next three weeks. He said Hash, Alley, Hodges and Surface all had around or more than 100 yards rushing.

“We also threw two touchdown passes. Matthew Hawks passed for a touchdown and ran in another. Underwood threw for a touchdown and scored on a QB sneak,” Harmon said. “It was great that our second unit could get in and execute so well with three touchdown drives in a row.”
