Kat Mills struck out eight and allowed just five hits April 15 as Floyd County topped Carroll County 3-1 in a nondistrict softball game in Hillsville.
Carroll’s Rebecca Thomas only allowed four hits, but the Buffaloes also took advantage of four Cavalier errors. Neither team scored until the fourth inning as Marissa Bowman and Alexis Roop led off with back-to-back singles. Mills helped her own cause with an RBI single to put her team ahead 1-0. Errors led to two more Floyd runs in the sixth.
Carroll County (4-5, 3-1 SWD) did not get on the board until the seventh inning when Lillie Kimble and Lexi Hodge ripped consecutive singles. With one out, Danielle Spence’s RBI grounder scored Kimble to trim the deficit to 3-1, but Mills retired the next batter to pick up the victory.

Carroll 3, Marion 1
A pair of bunt singles was all the offense Carroll County’s softball team needed April 9 in a 3-1 Southwest District over Marion.
Despite managing just two hits in seven innings, Carroll manufactured two runs in the third inning and another in the fifth to rally from an early 1-0 deficit. Marion scored first in the top of the third, but Carroll answered with two runs in the fourth without the benefit of a base hit. Leanna Rippey and Grace Ayers both reached on errors and scored on passed balls as the Cavaliers took a 2-1 lead.
Carroll County added another hitless run in the sixth as Rippey laid down a bunt and reached on an error. She later scored her second run of the game on a wild pitch.
