A 6-7 senior post player, Tyler Lineberry is the tallest player on Carroll County’s Region IV, Division 4 championship basketball team. Lineberry likes to mix it up inside and he has even fired up a couple of 3-pointers during his time on the varsity team.
Aside from adding a huge physical presence to the Cavaliers’ front court, Lineberry also volunteers his free time on the Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department. We also had to give him a hard time about being a UVa fan, but he took it all in great stride, just like the Cavaliers did in winning the program’s first regional title in 33 years on Saturday night.
What’s this about a dunk contest every day before practice with Coach Hawks? Who usually wins and why? Well, Coach Hawks thought he could beat me at dunking but I think he realized, he’s getting older and doesn’t have the legs he used to. So I’ve had to show him who does have the young legs.
How did you get the nickname Lebronberry? My leg strength and agility has improved which has enabled me to jump higher so one day Coach Jackson started calling me that.
Tell us about your passion for firefighting and how you got involved in it? I’ve loved firefighting ever since I can remember. That’s what I played when I was little. All my toys were mostly firetrucks. I always wanted to be a firefighter so when I was old enough, I got involved with the department.
It must be an honor to work with the Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department. What’s it like going out on a fire call with those guys? It is truly an honor to be a part of HVFD. All the guys are great! Like most young firefighters, the adrenaline rush you get from the anticipation to hear the tones go off is like nothing else! Although someone might be in trouble, you’re there to aide, it’s just a feeling you can’t explain and it’s a feeling I look forward to the rest of my life. When the tones go off, everyone gets focused on the task at hand and you know somebody’s always got your back.
Tell us about your “STX” truck and how much you love Fords? I love all trucks but Ford’s have always been my #1 pick. As for my STX, there’s no where the STX can’t go, just ask my buddies.
What was it like playing against Virginia Episcopal? Playing them reminded me of the level of competition I played this past summer with my AAU team of Charlotte. It’s a higher level than what you’re used to playing in high school. The players were bigger, more skilled, and faster.
Tyler, we know you are a huge UVa fan. Are you even old enough to remember the last time the Wahoos beat Virginia Tech in football? No, but I’m sure my dad could tell you. He’s the die hard UVA fan, but I can tell you the last time they easily beat VA Tech in basketball. That would be the two times they played and beat them this season.
What’s it been like being a part of one of the most successful Carroll County basketball teams in school history? It’s been an honor. I’ll be proud to look back one day and say I was a part of this team.
How long do you think it will be before the Cavaliers beat the Hokies again on the gridiron? With all the coach changing, should be next November.
To be fair, it’s been a rough basketball season for Virginia Tech. How much enjoyment do you get out of seeing UVa smack the Hokies around on the hardwood and other sports? It’s just good to see Tony Bennett finally have the team to get the job done and hopefully keep winning in the future.
Who is the toughest player you’ve ever had to guard? That’s a hard question. I played against a lot of D1 Recruits this past summer with the Carolina Hawks. I was average size on the circuit this summer so I played against players that were 6’8 & 6’9. One player in particular I do remember was a 6’9 Marquette recruit. We both played a hard game. It was an awesome experience.
What in the world is this game called “Touched you last”? It’s a game we boys have played since 8th grade, It’s kind of like Tag. It seems to have grown throughout the school, so it must not be too bad of a game…I like it anyway!!!
You like pickup trucks, farming, cowboy boots and firefighting. Is it safe to say you have a little redneck in your blood? Some people might “word” it differently but my answer is …….YEA!
Rate Michael Howlett as a substitute teacher? Mr. Howlett is an A1 substitute teacher except for one thing, he’s a tar heel! (Editor’s Note: We give you an A+ on this answer Tyler, but we can’t say the same for Mr. Howlett if he subs for one of your classes in the future).
What’s it been like playing AAU basketball for the Carolina Hawks and other AAU basketball teams out of North Carolina? The competition at that level is awesome. I’ve been very blessed to have had the opportunity to play with and against some of the best athletes in the nation. I played with Team Phoenix Elite out of Greensboro my junior year and with the Carolina Hawks out of Charlotte this past summer. Playing up and down the east coast in the Big Shots circuit with the Carolina Hawks got me exposure with college coaches that will hopefully pay off the next 4 years.
Tell us about the time you were 12 and checked your parent’s home for soft spots? I’m sure it was around fire prevention week in October. I backed my dad’s truck up to the lower end of the roof and climbed up, in my full fire gear, to check and make sure my roof was safe. I thought it was a good idea, but my mom sure didn’t!
Last year you fired up a couple of 3-pointers. We know you can bang down low in the paint, but tell us about your outside shot? I’ve always worked on my shot, to have the ability to play outside. I know I will need it for the next level.
How far do you think Carroll County can go this postseason? I know in my heart we can win State.
