The Hillsville Volunteer Rescue Squad, which has been inactive since some time in 2006, is moving closer to dissolving as a corporation with a program that will award grants to incorporated, non-profit organizations that serve the immediate Hillsville area.
“I would think this should be the last thing that needs to be done so the corporation can be dissolved and end put to it,” said Larry South, Hillsville’s former town manager who is now the North Wilkesboro town manager.
During a September 2012 interview, South, who is listed as the rescue squad’s president on State Corporation Commission documents, said the rescue squad has one or two CDs, as well as a small checking account.
The minimum amount of a grant proposal is $500 and the maximum is $5,000, and multiple grants may be approved.
All proposals must clearly describe how the funds will benefit the Hillsville community, who the beneficiaries will be and the time from of implementation along with the responsible accounting authority. The proposals are limited to two to 12 typewritten pages.
South said making sure the money is returned to the community is important since it was the community who helped support the rescue squad.
“This should be a fair way to do it,” he said. “It gives everybody a chance to make a proposal and spread the money around.”
The grants will be judged by members of the rescue squad and the squad’s ladies’ auxiliary.
Proposals should be sent to HVRS Grant Proposals, P.O. Box 463, Hillsville, Va. 24343 by Jan. 31. Those receiving grants will be notified no later than Feb. 28, and disbursement of funds will occur within 60 days of grant approval.
