Rotella goes 5-0 to lead Carroll’s wrestling squad

Joey Rotella went undefeated in the Spencer Chang Memorial Jan. 5 in Martinsville to lead Carroll County’s wrestling team.

Bronson Bowman and Logan McCollum both went 4-1 for the Cavaliers. Wrestling at 145 pounds, Rotella opened the tournament by earning a 12-4 major decision over Morehead’s T. Dabbs. He also pinned his Tunstall opponent in 2:18, pinned his Martinsville opponent in 4:26 and earned a 14-7 major decision over Franklin County’s Brown. Rotella completed the day with a 1:45 pin over a Bandit B team opponent.

Bowman went 4-1 in the 138-pound ranks. His only loss was an 11-8 decision to Dabbs of Morehead. He pinned Tunstall’s Norton in 3:42, Martinsville’s Wicher in 3:02 and Franklin County’s Pierce in 1:17. Bowman took down his Bandit B opponent in 32 seconds.

Wrestling at 152 pounds, McCollum won all four matches by decision. He earned a 7-5 decision over Morehead’s Biggs and a 9-7 victory over Tunstall’s Chambers. McCollum also took decisions of 5-0 from Martinsville’s Harrison and 8-7 over Bandit B’s Rakes. His lone loss was to Franklin County.

Gavin Scott (160 pounds), Gerardo Casstillo (170 pounds) and Jarrett Thomas (106) all finished with 3-2 records in the Spencer Chang Memorial. Scott pinned Martinsville’s Martin in 1:21 and Bandit B’s Montgomery in 2:54, while all three of Castillo’s victories came by pinfall. Thomas won one of his matches by forfeit and then took down his Tunstall opponent in 20 seconds and pinned his Bandit B opponent in 1:05.

Josh Brooks won one match for Carroll at 132 pounds, pinning Bandit B’s Dalbs in 1:10.
