Adam Crotts ripped a grand slam to key a nine-run third inning Thursday as Carroll County hammered Floyd County 14-2 in a season opener in Hillsville.
After a scoreless first inning, the Cavaliers rocked the Buffaloes for 14 hits and 14 runs over the next three innings to win by the mercy rule in five innings.
Blake Bowman sparked Carroll (1-1) in the second inning, ripping a two-run double that scored Matt Fink and Adam Nester to tie the game at 2-all. Jordan Lamb followed suit with an RBI single to score Bowman. Lamb later came around the horn to put the Cavs ahead 4-2.
Carroll went off in the third as 11 of the first 12 batters reached base to open the inning. Crotts smacked a leadoff single, then advanced to second as Brandon Atwood walked. Fink followed with an RBI double to score Crotts for a 5-2 lead. After Floyd recorded the first out of the inning, Nester, Bowman, Lamb and Jarrod McCombs all hit consecutive singles.
Reavis walked with the bases loaded, setting up Crotts’ grand slam to put the Cavs ahead 13-2.
Carroll added one more run in the fourth as Craig Rosen singled and scored on Tyler Reavis’ RBI double.
Brett Anauo picked up the win for Carroll County, striking out two and giving up three hits and two runs in two innings. Zack Edwards struck out two in two innings of scoreless and hitless relief, while Alex Ousley struck out two in a perfect fifth inning of relief.
Crotts led the Cavs at the plate, going 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs. Fink went 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Lamb went 2-for-3 with two runs and 2 RBI. McCombs turned in a 2-for-2 effort with two runs and an RBI, while Bowman went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Reavis scored once in a 1-for-3 effort with an RBI, Atwood scored once and went 1-for-2 and Nester went 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Rosen also scored and singled in his only plate appearance.

Patrick County 5, Carroll County 1
Patrick County scored three runs in the fourth inning to secure a 5-1 nondistrict victory Friday over visiting Carroll County in Stuart.
The Cougars scored a run each in the second and third innings to take a quick 2-0 lead. After a leadoff double and a walk in the fourth, Patrick took advantage of two Cavalier errors to go ahead 5-0.
Carroll County (1-1) got its only run in the top of the fifth after Tyler Reavis ripped a two-out double, then scored on Blake Bowman’s RBI single.
Patrick County pitcher Parker Heath struck out 11 and only allowed three hits in picking up the victory. Heath got out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning after walking two straight batters and hitting another, all with one out. He struck out the next batter and coaxed a groundout to end the inning without any runs scored.
Reavis and Adam Crotts both doubled for the Cavaliers, while Bowman went 1-for-1 with an RBI.
