An 80-year-old Fancy Gap man has passed away from injuries suffered in a traffic accident Dec. 17 at the bottom of Lambsburg Mountain.

According to Virginia State Police Trooper R.B. Phipps, James Monroe Flippen was driving a 1995 Nissan Sentra south on Route 620 at approximately 11:40 a.m. when he entered a curve and the steering wheel wouldn’t turn. According to Phipps, Flippen’s daughter, a passenger in the vehicle, said he pulled the emergency brake and the vehicle ran off the road and struck a tree.

Phipps said the daughter was not injured, but Flippen was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. According to his obituary, Flippen passed away three days later on Thursday. Cana Fire and Rescue also responded to the accident.

Phipps said no charges were pending in the accident.
