Carroll County’s boys’ varsity basketball team opened the season in impressive fashion Friday night, hammering Patrick County 82-33 in Hillsville.
Playing an outmatched Cougars’ team, the Cavaliers built a 44-15 lead at the half. Carroll (1-0) continued to play hard in the second half, ourscoring Patrick 27-2 in the third quarter to up its cushion to 71-17 heading into the final eight minutes.
“I was pleased. I thought the kids came out with intensity like they had something to prove and they didn’t take them lightly. That was what I was most pleased about,” Carroll County head coach Brad Hawks said. “Patrick shot 11 free throws in the fourth quarter, so the kids were still playing pretty hard.”
With Hawks substituting freely, 13 different Cavaliers scored. Connor Lundy led Carroll with 21 points, while Cody Keith fired in 11 and Austin Horton chipped in nine.
“To be up that much, I thought we did a pretty good job executing and working on man-to-man defense. We were setting screens and being where we were supposed to be, so it was a good time to work in different combinations and see who played well together and who was in the right spots,” Hawks said.
Carroll County was scheduled to travel to Patrick on Dec. 5 before hosting the big rivalry game with Galax on Dec. 6. Hawks has never beaten his alma mater in his first four years as the Cavaliers’ head coach. While Carroll hopes to break its losing streak against the Maroon Tide, Hawks knows it won’t be easy.
“The rivalry between Carroll and Galax will always make it close. Even when some of the teams haven’t been that great on either side, it’s still a good rivalry and emotion carries the score a little bit,” Hawks said.
