A 22-year-old Woodlawn man will be charged with felony hit and run and driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol after crashing the same vehicle twice within 10 minutes of each other Saturday.

According to the Virginia State Police, Ethan Douglas Funk, 22, was airlifted from Snake Creek Road to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. after the second accident. According to Investigating Trooper R.B. Phipps, the first accident occurred at 2:04 p.m on Snake Creek Road. Funk was driving a 1989 Chevrolet Corsica when he ran off the road to the right and hit a bank, causing him to cross the road and hit a parked vehicle, a 1991 Toyota Corolla registered to Doniel Richardson of Snake Creek Road.

Phipps estimated the wreck did $1,000 worth of damage to Funk’s vehicle and $3,000 worth of damage to Richardson’s vehicle. According to Phipps, Funk then fled the scene of the accident. Eight minutes later at 2:12 p.m., Funk wrecked again. According to Phipps, Funk ran off the road, hit the bank and was ejected from the rear window of the vehicle.

“Both crashes were drug and alcohol related,” Phipps said, adding that Funk would be charged with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol and felony hit and run when he is released from the hospital.

Phipps said Funk was fortunate to have survived the second crash.

“He was most likely ejected from the rear window, but the steering wheel was all bent up and the driver’s seat was broken,” Phipps said. “He was really lucky.”
