A North Carolina man was airlifted Monday afternoon after overturning his truck on the Interstate 77 Exit 14 bridge overpass in Hillsville.

According to Trooper R.B. Phipps of the Virginia State Police, Jacob Chase Chandler, 20, of Lowgap, N.C., was driving a 1999 Ford Dually southbound on I-77 when the accident occurred at approximately 12:40 p.m. Phipps said Chandler suffered a migraine headache and blacked out before running off the road to left, crossing the road and running off the right side of the road, hitting the bridge and overturning before sliding what Phipps guessed was 200 yards.

The top of Chandler’s truck was completely smashed in, but he was alert and conscious at the scene of the accident, Phipps said, adding that Chandler suffered head trauma and major trauma to his left arm. He was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Phipps said Chandler no charges were pending against Chandler due to it involving a health issue.

Assisting the Virginia State Police at the scene were Carroll EMS, the Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department, and the Hillsville Police Department helped direct traffic detoured off the interstate.
