Carroll drops SWD contests to Graham, Richlands

Four Richlands players scored in double figures Saturday and the Blue Tornado made 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to earn a 60-45 Southwest District victory over Carroll County in Hillsville.

Carroll County (2-13, 1-5 SWD) was limited to 16 points in the first half, falling behind 16-8 after the first quarter and 29-16 at halftime. The Cavaliers trimmed the deficit to 11 points heading into the fourth quarter and to three points with four minutes remaining in the game. Richlands (5-8, 3-4 SWD) made 14 of 22 free throws in the final quarter to secure the victory, however.

Gunner McGee led all scorers with 18 points, while Ethan Keene tossed in 15 more. Eric Mulkey (11 points) and Blake Tatum (10 points) also cracked double digits in scoring for the Blue Tornado.

Tyler Reavis and Isaiah Thompson both scored 10 points to lead Carroll County. Lucas Marshall added nine points and Demone Jackson contributed four points for the Cavaliers.

Graham 67, Carroll Co. 55

Graham used a third-quarter explosion Jan. 13 to pick up a 67-55 Southwest District victory over Carroll County in Hillsville.

Tied with Carroll at 23-all at the half, Graham (6-3, 3-0 SWD) erupted for 24 points in the third quarter and 44 in the second half. The G-Men broke open the tie game with an 18-4 run to start the second half to roll to a 41-27 lead. Carroll never trailed by less than nine points the rest of the game after consecutive James Lanning 3-pointers made it 54-45 early in the fourth quarter.

The Cavaliers led a good portion of the first half, including a 17-12 lead early in the second quarter.

Tyler Reavis had a big night in a losing effort, scoring a game-high 26 points and dishing out 10 assists. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Lanning hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 10 points.

Jason Palmer led Graham with 21 points, while Jordan Bryan added 20 more for the G-Men.
