A Cana man faces multiple charges after a Friday morning accident killed a woman in Woodlawn.
Stephen Edwin Towe, 41, was driving a 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora, owned by his passenger, Denise Webb of Hillsville, when he struck a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by 19-year-old Ashley Nicole Whitaker of Woodlawn on Route 872, Woodlawn Road, about 300 yards west of U.S. 58.
According to Trooper Jim Bledsoe of the Virginia State Police, Towe passed another vehicle by crossing a solid line in a curve when he met Whitaker head on.
Whitaker’s passenger, Jessica Ruth Bowyer, 26, of Middlesex, N.C., was killed at the scene of the accident.
Towe was charged with driving while intoxicated on Friday. On Saturday, he was charged with a count of involuntary manslaughter, a count of felony reckless driving, possession of marijuana and driving with a revoked license. On Monday, he was charged with felony counts of not wearing a seat belt, aggravated involuntary manslaughter and two counts of maiming another while DUI.
Towe was taken to Twin County Regional Hospital before going to Roanoke Memorial Hospital and then to New River Valley Regional Jail, where he was processed.
Whitaker and Webb were also taken to TCRH before being transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. where they were recuperating as of press time.
