An 18-year-old Austinville woman was killed during a single-vehicle accident in the Laurel community of Carroll County on Sept. 9.

According to Virginia State Trooper J.R. Alderman, Bethanie Coulson was the passenger in a 1997 Toyota 4-Runner that ran off the road to the left, overturned and struck a tree on Pleasant View Road, about six-tenths of a mile west of Route 745 at 11:10 p.m. that night. Alderman said the vehicle was driven by Amanda Gail Lester, 25, of Laurel Fork. She has been charged with DUI, reckless driving, and failure to wear a seat belt. Other charges are pending.

“It is still under investigation,” Alderman said.

Ryan May of Hillsville and Thomas Mulhall of Max Meadows were also passengers in the vehicle, Alderman said. No charges are pending against those two.

Lester was transported to Wytheville, then to Roanoke following the accident. She was charged with DUI at the Wytheville hospital before being transported, according to the Virginia State Police. Neither May or Mulhall were transported.
