The Carroll County Agricultural Fair will begin Sept. 18, which reminds us of the importance and farming to Carroll County as well as its local impact.

The annual fair offers many fun games, activities and events, but it is also a showcase of the farmers of the county and their crops and livestock. With nearly 1,000 farms in Carroll County, agriculture continues to be one of the biggest economic boons to the area. Across the Commonwealth, Carroll continues to rank in the top 10 producers for many different crops. And recent studies have shown that the impact of forestry and agriculture to Carroll County at over $100 million.

But now, more than ever, we need to make sure we continue to support our local farmers, and perhaps even step it up a couple of notches. With the elevated prices of fuel, so to have the prices soared at the grocery store counters. But locally-grown vegetables, fruits and other crops can be found relatively cheaper at local produce stands that dot the county as well as the Southwest Virginia Farmer’s Market. Not only does buying from these places, as well as chains that use local crops, help our area’s farmers, it also helps our wallets.

Take time to remember the importance farmers play in our area and across the country. Locals are also encouraged to take time to attend the fair, to check out exhibits of area farmers, livestock, etc., and to continue to show them our support in these trying economic times.
