Carroll County’s boys’ soccer team climbed into second place in the Southwest District standings with wins over Tazewell and Richlands last week.

Payback was on the minds of a Carroll County (5-5, 3-2 SWD) team that has not beaten Tazewell since 2005 and that had been upset by Richlands earlier in the year for the Blue Tornado’s only district win in school history.

“The theme of the whole week was revenge,” Carroll County head coach Marion Harris said.

The Cavaliers started the week off with a bang Monday with a 2-0 district win over Tazewell in Hillsville. Carroll took control quickly, scoring two goals within the first 12 minutes of the game.

Roger Perez put the Cavaliers on the board early, booting a high shot into the back of the net. Teammate Matt Felts doubled the advantage a couple of minutes later with a goal off an assist from Mikey Payne.

“That was the first time we had beaten Tazewell since 2005 and it was real nice to shut out a district team,” Harris said.

The Cavs, which were upset 3-1 by Richlands on March 31, bounced back Thursday with a 2-0 district victory at Richlands.

Zack Edwards gave Carroll a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the game as he took an assist from Luis Lemus. With about 30 seconds left in the first half, the Cavs scored their first goal off a corner kick this year. Roger Perez took the kick and dribbled around a defender before crossing it to the middle to Matt Felts, who put it in the net for a 2-0 lead.

“It was a big win for us because Richlands embarrassed us the first time. They controlled the game the first time and their keeper had a phenomenal game,” Harris said.

Carroll is alone in second place in the district standings, two games behind Abingdon. Harris said Carroll’s defense has been outstanding as of late.

“Zack Surratt got his second and third career shutouts in goal and the defense was great,” Harris said. “We’ve had four or five different combinations back there and they really played well this week. Because of certain players being out, we have had to play different people and everybody has stepped up.”

Carroll will host Graham for Senior Night on Thursday. The Cavs will also hold a blue-white fundraiser scrimmage on May 2 before the annual Alumni Game begins at 6:30 p.m. that night.
