Eddie Joe Thompson, Sr., 74, author of Growing Up With “Shoeless Joe,” completed the chapters of his worldly existence Sunday, April 27, 2008. Born in Greenville, Mr. Thompson was the son of the late James W. “Jimmie” and Edna Gaines Thompson. Over the course of life, Mr. Thompson served as an executive in the hospitality industry in Myrtle Beach, SC, Roanoke and Laurel Fork, VA. He promoted the Myrtle Beach golf industry through his “From Tee to Green” weekly column, “Grand Strand Golfer” magazine, and by being an instrumental influence in the creation of the Myrtle Beach “Golf-o-tel” golf package. An avid golfer, he served as a development consultant, general manager, and teaching professional for both the Lakeview Lodge and the Olde Mill Golf Club of Virginia. An entrepreneur, Mr. Thompson was CEO and President of JTI-Publishing, Inc. He was an accomplished artist and assisted in promoting Myrtle Beach tourism as a past director of the local Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by his wife, Doris Thompson of Myrtle Beach; his daughter, Michelle Beverly-Bosley of Myrtle Beach; a son, Joe Thompson, Jr. of Ashburn, VA; his loving and attentive sister, Rose Rollins of Greenville; two brothers, Jack Thompson of Myrtle Beach and Bob Thompson of Greenville; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Over his life Mr. Thompson was tremendously loved and supported by his extended family in the Greenville area. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins played a significant role in his quality of life. Mr. Thompson was predeceased by one brother, Jimmie Thompson, Jr. A memorial service was held Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home.
