A Galax woman was airlifted with serious injuries after an accident on U.S. 58 in Woodlawn on Friday morning.

According to Virginia State Police Trooper J.D. Delp, Maria Guzman, 40, of Galax, was airlifted with head injuries following an accident due to icy roads. Delp said Guzman was driving a 1996 Ford Explorer eastbound on U.S. 58 near Windsor Road at approximately 6:50 a.m. when she lost control on the icy road and ran off the road to the right. The vehicle then overturned on the driver’s side. Guzman was trapped and had to be extricated from the vehicle. Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department and Pipers Gap Rescue Squad responded to the scene. Guzman was then airlifted from the Woodlawn area, Delp said.

Delp said there were six other passengers in the vehicle. Three of the passengers were transported to Twin County Regional Hospital with minor injuries, he said.

Delp did not file charges in the accident based on the road conditions.
