With many deep family connections in the area, Glenvar’s Jack Leonard made sure Carroll County won’t forget his name anytime soon.

On Friday, the Highlanders’ senior rushed for 160 yards and five touchdowns as Glenvar defeated the Cavaliers 49-14 in a Three Rivers District contest in Roanoke. After Landry Gerbers tossed an 11-yard touchdown early in the first quarter, Leonard scored on touchdown runs of 18 and 14 yards to stake Glenvar (5-0, 1-0 Three Rivers District) to a 21-0 lead.

Behind a massive offensive line that averages 285 pounds, Leonard continued the onslaught in the second quarter with touchdown runs of 3, 1 and 5 yards. Leonard’s five-touchdown half sparked the Highlanders to a commanding 42-0 advantage at the break. Leonard is the great-grandson of the late Otto and Mary Sumner of Hillsville and the late John and Laura Mae Leonard, also of Carroll County. His grandparents, Dwain and Judy Leonard, also grew up in Carroll County. Leonard’s parents are Alan and Kim Leonard.

Gerbers threw another touchdown pass in the third quarter and completed 11-of-13 passes for 128 yards. Carroll County (1-4, 0-1 Three Rivers District) got on the board twice in the fourth quarter on Dylan Rodrigue’s five-yard return of a fumbled Glenvar punt and Jacob Motley’s five-yard touchdown run. Kyle Robinson nailed both extra points for the Cavaliers.

Carroll County will try to bounce back this Friday at home with another Three Rivers District contest against visiting Floyd County. Homecoming festivities are set to begin before the game at approximately 6:30 p.m.
