Sydney Nester struck out 15 in a one-hitter May 22 as Carroll County defeated Bassett 6-0 in a Conference 24 Quarterfinal in Hillsville.
Nester walked two and only gave up a one-out single to Kendall Varner in the sixth inning. She got plenty of help at the plate as the Cavaliers banged out 12 hits, including a 2-for-4 effort with 3 RBIs by Emily Cook.
Carroll County (17-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Alexis Meredith singled with one out and advanced to third on a groundout by Cook. Meredith later scored on Nester’s RBI single. The Cavaliers added another run in the third inning as Cook reached on a two-base error to left field and crossed home plate on Laken Crockett’s run-scoring single for a 2-0 advantage.
Carroll broke the game open with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Spangler spanked a one-out single and Kyndall Hiatt and Meredith followed with singles to load the bases. Spangler scored on an error and Hiatt and Meredith both scored on Cook’s two-run single to left. Chasity Tompkins added an insurance run in the sixth after reaching on a fielder’s choice and scoring on Cook’s RBI double to center field.
With the win, Carroll County advanced to the Conference 24 Semifinals against William Byrd originally scheduled for May 24 in Hillsville. Due to rain, the game has been moved to Thursday, May 25 in Hillsville at 6 p.m.
Meredith went 2-for-3 and scored twice for Carroll, while Hiatt was 2-for-4 with a run. Crockett also had two hits and an RBI and Nester was 1-for-3 with a run batted in. Spangler had a hit and a run and Jena Alley added a base hit for the Cavaliers, who also qualified for the Region 4A West Tournament with the win over Bassett.
