Sydney Nester and Emily Cook again came up big for Carroll County’s softball team April 4 in a low-scoring River Ridge District game. Cook doubled and Nester singled to break open a scoreless tie in the sixth inning, while Nester hurled a two-hit shutout in a 2-0 district win at Salem.
Six days earlier, Cook’s solo home run in the first inning was the only run in the Cavaliers’ 1-0 district win over Cave Spring. Nester struck out 16 and pitched a no-hitter in that contest.
Tuesday’s contest saw another low-scoring pitcher’s duel between Nester and Salem’s Haellie Gordon. Carroll County (4-0, 2-0 River Ridge District) defeated Salem twice last year by scores of 2-1 with Nester and Gordon battling it out on the mound. This time, Gordon struck out 14 and allowed just five hits and one earned run. Nester struck out 12 for the Cavaliers and allowed just two hits – a leadoff single in the first inning and a one-out single in the seventh. Sammie Haga reached on an error with no outs in the fifth inning for the Spartans and moved to second on Kendra Bolen’s sacrifice bunt. She was the only Salem runner to reach second base.
Meanwhile, the Cavaliers had their own troubles against Gordon. Carroll had a pair of runners in scoring position in the second inning after Nester was hit by a pitch, took second on a Laken Crockett grounder and third on a Katie McKenzie single. McKenzie advanced to second base on a passed ball, but Gordon whiffed the next two batters to end the threat.
Cook, who went 2-for-4 to pace Carroll, ripped a leadoff single in the fourth inning but was stranded at second base. Then in the sixth inning, Cook spanked a two-out double to left field. She later scored the go-ahead run on Nester’ RBI single. The Cavaliers added an insurance run in the seventh inning after Jena Alley singled. Pinch-runner Kayleigh Webb would go on to score after Taylor Spangler and Chloe Easter both reached on errors.
