Sydney Nester struck out 13 and Kyndall Hiatt ripped a solo home run March 22 as Carroll County’s softball team defeated Galax 6-1 in a non-district contest in Hillsvile.
Nester walked two and gave up two hits and an unearned run as Carroll improved to 2-0 on the season. The Lady Cavaliers pushed across five runs in the first two innings, which was more than enough run support for Nester.
Carroll plated three runs in the first inning after Hiatt led off by reaching on an error. She later scored on Laken Crockett’s RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Nester than doubled to left centerfield to score Crockett and Nester scored on a Katie McKenzie single for a 3-0 advantage.
With one out in the second inning, Hiatt ripped a bomb over the center field fence for a solo homer and a 4-0 lead. Emily Cook also scored after reaching on a fielder’s choice, a Crockett walk, and Nester’s RBI single.
The Cavaliers added one more run in the fifth as Alexis Meredith reached on an error and came around the horn on Cook’s run-scoring single for a 6-0 cushion. Kylee Hill had both of Galax’s base hits. She singled in the seventh inning with two outs, took second on a walk, then scored after a pair of Carroll errors.
Nester went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs to lead the Cavs, while McKenzie was a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI. Hiatt went 1-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Cook and Crockett each had one hit, one run and one RBI. Meredith also had one hit and one run in the victory.

Junior ace Sydney Nester struck out nine in a five-inning no-hitter March 21 as Carroll County’s softball team opened the season with a 10-0 victory over Floyd County in Hillsville.
Nester struck out the first seven batters she faced and did not give up a hit in the mercy-rule shortened contest. Nester walked two and Floyd put two more runners on base as a result of Cavalier errors.
The Carroll standout got plenty of help at the plate as the Cavaliers ripped 12 hits in the victory, led by Jena Alley’s 3-for-3 day with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Laken Crockett added two hits and a run, while Alexis Meredith and Kyndall Hiatt both drove in a pair of runs on one hit. Kayleigh Webb went 1-for-1 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Taylor Spangler and Nester each drove in a run for Carroll.
The Lady Cavs took control of the contest with a five-run second inning. Crockett got the big frame going with a single and moved up when Katie McKenzie reached on a bunt. Jeannie Utt singled to load the bases. Alley and Spangler both followed with RBI singles to make it 2-0 before Hiatt walked with the bases loaded. Meredith added a two-run double to left centerfield to cap the big inning.
Alley’s RBI single in the third scored Kayleigh Webb to make it a 6-0 Carroll lead. The Cavs added two more runs in the fourth when Nester’s fielder’s choice plated Meredith and Chasity Tompkins scored on a wild pitch. Carroll ended the game by the mercy rule with two more runs in the fifth. Alley doubled and pinch-runner Chloe Easter scored on Webb’s RBI single. Hiatt then ended the game with an RBI single to plate Webb for a decisive 10-0 victory.
