Crisp passing on offense and a suffocating defense helped Carroll County’s boys put two rough nights behind them and finish the Fort Chiswell Tournament with a bang Friday in a 55-35 win over Floyd County.

Adam Horton drilled three 3-pointers, finished with a game-high 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Cavaliers shot nearly 50 percent from the field (20-of-43). Meanwhile, the Carroll County (4-4, 0-2 River Ridge District) defense limited the Buffaloes to an anemic 16.9 percent shooting (10-of-59) from the field.

About the only thing the Cavaliers didn’t do well was rebound as Floyd managed to corral several long offensive rebounds throughout the contest. It was quite a turnaround for a Carroll team that struggled mightily the previous two nights in losses to Radford and Galax.

“We went through a little spell there where we were struggling to rebound, but overall I couldn’t be more pleased with the effort tonight. Coming off a couple of rough games, they really responded in a good way and we shot the ball probably the best we have shot the ball all year,” Carroll County head coach Tee Jackson said. “They played together and looked for each other. I was very happy.”

Horton opened the game with a 3-pointer and added a layup less than a minute later to ignite an 8-0 Cavalier run. Struggling to get anything going, Floyd County did not score until 2:54 remained in the opening quarter as the Buffs missed their first 10 shots from the field. A Luke Johnson offensive stickback and a 3-pointer by Caden Hodges to close the opening quarter put Carroll in front 18-6 after the opening period.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Micah Johnson and Horton increased the Cavalier advantage to 25-8 midway through the second quarter. Johnson led Carroll with six assists as the Cavs’ offense continually made the extra pass and found the open man.

“Tonight was sort of what our coaching staff had envisioned to start the year in terms of being able to share the ball and have four of five guys who could get to double figures or close to it,” Jackson said. “It would have been easy to come out here and lay down after a rough couple of games but I am really proud of them for how they played tonight.”

With Carroll leading 46-29 early in the fourth quarter, Horton hit 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to increase the Cavalier lead to 52-29. Horton had a monster game, leading Carroll in both scoring and rebounds.

“Adam got a heck of a lot of rebounds. He has aspirations to play in college. He loves the game and he’s a very hard worker,” Jackson said. “I am thrilled he had such a good game tonight. He puts the time in and he is a good kid.”

Micah Johnson and Garret Haynes both added 10 points for the Cavaliers, while Brogan Bowman and Caden Hodges each netted seven points for a team anxious to host its first home game Jan. 3 against Salem.

“We needed some momentum going into next week with a couple of district games and Galax again, so it is good to get off the losing streak,” Jackson said. “We have our first home game on Tuesday and we are looking forward to a home game and the energy hopefully from the fans. I know the kids are excited.”

Galax 45, Carroll Co. 42

Quinton Morton-Robertson scored 20 points to lead Radford over Carroll County 47-30 in the opener of the Fort Chiswell Christmas Tournament on Dec. 28.

Morton-Robertson also led the Bobcats with five assists as the Cavaliers had a hard time matching up with the Radford point guard. Adam Horton led Carroll with nine points as the Cavalier offense never could get going.

“I think it was a combination of things. One, Radford is very good. Their point guard is a very, very good player. He is probably the best player we’ve played all year,” Jackson said. “We had a hard time controlling him. We did a pretty good job on everybody else, but he really gave us problems. The way they play we had a lot of turnovers and didn’t handle the ball particularly well. It was closer than the score ended up being. For most of the game it was a 10- to 12-point game, we just couldn’t quite get over the hump.”

The Cavalier offense also slumped Thursday in a losers’ bracket game with Galax as Carroll lost 45-42 to a team it had beaten 40-31 exactly two weeks earlier. Caden Hodges (15 points), Micah Johnson (12 points) and Horton (9 points) combined for 36 of the team’s 42 points.

“It was just a disappointing effort. Give Galax credit. They deserved to win,” Jackson said. “They played harder than we did from start to finish and I think that is what was so disappointing about it. We just didn’t show up.”
