Carroll man dies in tree accident

A tragic set of circumstances led to the wreck in Hillsville on Wednesday that resulted in a Hillsville woman being airlifted.Sometime before 2 p.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office responded to 7603 Coulson Church Road in the Laurel community in reference to the death of Castus Eugene Horton.“Mr. Horton and a friend were cutting a large tree as it lay on the ground,” the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release Thursday. “Unfortunately the tree rolled over on Mr. Horton as he cut the tree.”Those assisting at the scene were Carroll County EMS, Laurel Rescue Squad and Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Rocky Dalton.

A New York man has been charged with multiple drug offenses after a traffic stop Monday in Carroll County.According to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Cody Edwards initiated a traffic stop on Interstate 77 at approximately 2:06 p.m. with a four-door car from New York for speeding near the 10 mile marker in the northbound lane.

Police investigating motorcycle wreck in Fancy Gap

Police are investigating this single-vehicle motorcycle accident in Carroll County on Monday afternoon. Virginia State Police Trooper Shon Phillips, on left, said he believes a motorcycle driven by James Fletcher, 38, of Mount Airy (on right), allegedly ran off the right side of U.S. 52 in Fancy Gap and laid down his Suzuki GS 450.
