Oakland Students Committed to Caring
Oakland Elementary school recently held its annual canned food drive for the Carroll County Food Bank. Oakland students collected nearly 2,500 food items during the drive. The event was coordinated by Americorps Tutors Sam
Crawford and Lisa Burcham. Mrs. Stuart's 5th grade class and Mr. Goad's 3rd class collected over 800 cans each and both earned a Wii party for their efforts. "This is far and away the largest contribution from Oakland" said

Fancy Gap's Top Dogs for Second Six Weeks
Fancy Gap Elementary School recently named "Top Dogs" for the second six weeks grading period. Teachers select students for "Top Dog" status who have shown good character traits for each grading period. These students model kindness, respect, responsibility,caring, trustworthiness and fairness for other students. In addition, "Top Dog" students work hard everyday and always give their best effort. Safety Chicken visits Gladeville students
Gladeville students recently participated in bus safety training. They worked on exiting the bus and learning how to cross the street safely. The Carroll County Safety Chicken, Mr. Roger Phillips, Transportation Supervisor, provided the training. Students will also have follow-up safety lessons this month by Mrs. Karen Coleman, PE Teacher. K-9 Unit Visits Oakland
Oakland Elementary School capped off Red Ribbon week activities with a visit from Carroll County's K-9 unit Deputy Cody Edwards and his partner Tiesto. Red Ribbon week is a national campaign to promote the danger of drugs. Carroll County Elementary Resource Officer Gator King coordinated the visit to the school. Deputy Edwards and King talked to students about the danger of illegal drugs then introduced Tiesto and demonstrated his drug tracking skills.

Gladeville School received donations for the school's Backpack Buddies Program from the Galax Moose Lodge for $200 and the Women of the Moose's donation of $100.  The donations will assist the Backpack Buddies Program through Mt. Olivet Church. Mt. Olivet Church coordinates and makes the Backpack's for the students. The Gladeville School community wishes to thank all parties for this service to our children.
