Local church offering free haircuts, school supplies, food and more

The start of a new school year can be a hectic and expensive time for parents and students. With that in mind, Midway Baptist Church of Galax seems to have the perfect cure for the back-to-school blues as it will be offering haircuts, school supplies and food free of charge on Sunday, August 5.

From 6 to 8 p.m. that evening, Midway Baptist Church will be hosting its Back-To-School Bash. Aside from all the freebies, the church will also be giving away several other items to lucky winners, including a laptop computer donated by Pro Networks. There will also be several gift card giveaways for local businesses.

The evening of fun will also include a 55-foot inflatable obstacle course, a bouncy house, face painting and a cornhole tournament with trophies for first and second place. A Clothes Table will also be offered with gently-used clothes that will be available to the community, free of charge.

Pastor Myron Dalton said the Back-to-School Bash is an extension of similar past endeavors by the church. Last year, Midway delivered 100 care packages to the community with basic food and hygiene items. And for the past two years, the church has undertaken a backpack drive, sending backpacks full of school supplies to West Virginia two years ago before doing the same thing locally last year.

“This is just expanding on our past programs and bringing them closer to home. We want our community to know that God loves to them. Today, churches are tempted to just kind of focus on what goes on in the church, but the Lord has gripped our hearts as a church and we need to minister as Jesus did, and that is to meet people at their point of need,” Dalton said. “The economy is bad and folks are looking for jobs, and for a lot of families it is tough to fork out $10 to $12 for a haircut, especially if they have two or three kids. That adds up, then having to buy the school supplies, we saw this as an opportunity to be a blessing to them and try to relieve that a little.”

Obviously, the free school supplies will be for students, but Dalton stresses that everybody is welcome to attend the event and enjoy free food and fellowship.

“Even if they don’t have kids and just want to come and sit in their lawn chairs and have fellowship and watch the kids, it is a community event. It’s not just for the kids,” Dalton said. “We would welcome everybody. The Cornerstone Praise team will be there singing and providing music while everything else is going on. People can come and listen to them while the kids are getting haircuts.”

Dalton said interest in the event continues to pick up steam. Donations are still coming in from local businesses wanting to participate in giveaways for the event. Dalton said all donations are much appreciated, and anyone interested in being part of the event may contact him at (276) 233-4199.

Midway Baptist Church is located at 834 Iron Ridge Road in Galax. Visit www.mbcgalax.org for more information.

Why don’t countries like us?
Ever wonder which countries hate the United States the most. We are hated by a lot of countries, but we really can’t help it. We were just born with a strong personality and, quite possibly, a bi-polar disorder. Nevertheless, we are hated, that’s for sure. Either other countries want us to stay ...
