Update - A Hillsville man is now charged with two felonies and and six misdemeanors after leading authorities on a high-speed chase Monday afternoon that resulted in him crashing his motorcycle, causing it to burst into flames. Brian E. Workman, 38, is charged with two felonies - one for possession of a Schedule II Drug (methamphetamine) with intent to distribute and another for eluding a law enforcement officer, the Carroll County Commonwealth's Attorney's office said Tuesday. Workman has also been charged with destruction of property, driving on a suspended license, driving without a motorcycle endorsement, driving without a registration, failure to obey a law enforcement officer’s commands to stop at a traffic stop, and two counts of reckless driving (one by the Virginia State Police and one by the Carroll County Sheriff's Office). _______ From Monday, April 22 A Hillsville man has been airlifted from Carroll County High School after he led local authorities on a high-speed chase Monday afternoon that resulted in him crashing his motorcycle, causing it to catch fire. According to Virginia State Police Sgt. Scott Todd, Brian Ellison Workman, 38, failed to stop at a traffic checkpoint Monday afternoon at the intersection of Keno and Snake Creek Roads. Workman, driving a 2003 Kawasaki motorcycle, failed to stop, leading Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies on a high-speed chase that reached speeds of 110 miles per hour, Todd said. The six-minute chase on Snake Creek Road ended at 1:43 p.m. when Workman lost control of the motorcycle in a curve in front of Fairview Presbyterian Church. “There was a deputy sitting off the road with his blue lights engaged. When he lost control, he slid into the deputy’s vehicle and the bike caught on fire,” Todd said. “He is being flown. I don’t know the extent of his injuries, but I know he had burns.” Todd estimated Workman was going approximately 60 miles per hour when he lost control in the curve. “His driver’s license was suspended. I don’t know if that is why he ran,” Todd said. “It appears he may have had methamphetamine on him,” Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner added. Todd said he would charge Workman with reckless driving at the scene. Meanwhile, The Virginia State Police are investigating the accident and charges will be considered after consultation with the Commonwealth's Attorney, Gardner said. Deputy Justin Haga was working the traffic stop at the intersection of Keno Road and Snake Creek Road along with Sgt. Bobby Lyons. “Sgt. Lyons was in the road and told him to stop. He was wearing a green Sheriff’s Office traffic vest, which was highly visible,” Haga said. “He had hands in the air motioning for him to stop." At that point, Sheriff Gardner said the motorcycle immediately sped past Lyons, almost striking him. "The motorcycle went past the deputy, stopped, looked at the deputy and then sped off," Gardner said. "Deputies then got behind the motorcycle with their safety equipment still activated, and attempted to stop the vehicle. The motorcycle refused to stop and continued down Snake Creek Road toward Hillsville. After approximately 8 miles, the motorcycle approached the town limits of Hillsville. After attempting to negotiate a sharp curve, the motorcycle ran off the roadway and struck a parked, marked Sheriff's office patrol unit, head on. The motorcycle then burst in to flames, which also burned the front of the marked patrol unit." Emergency first responders extinguished the flames from the driver using first their jackets and then a fire extinguisher when it immediately became available, Gardner said. Haga said Deputy Billy Johnson, who was at Gladesboro School at the time, joined the chase. Lyons also joined the pursuit a little later, Haga said. Haga said he was unsure of the how high speeds got during the chase. Workman was transported to Carroll County High School by Carroll County Fire & Rescue and transferred by med-flight to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.
