The Arts & Cultural Council of the Twin Counties raised $1,920 during its Empty Bowls fundraiser at the First United Methodist Church in Hillsville on March 22. All money benefits the Carroll County Ministerial Association Food Pantry.
For $10, each patron received a meal consisting of made-from-scratch soup from Shoney’s, bread and water, as well as a handcrafted bowl. The simple meal signifies the millions of people who go hungry in the world each day.
Students at Carroll County Intermediate School and Carroll County High School created just under 200 bowls for the event.
“The kids are really, really gifted, and they have a phenomenal teacher in Freida Cole,” said Laura Romanowski, executive director of the Arts & Cultural Council.
Romanowski felt the fundraiser was a success, noting, “We served a 173 people plus take-out orders, and some people donated extra.”
The previous week, an Empty Bowls fundraiser at First Independence United Methodist Church raised $865.
