Country Formals & Gifts will celebrate its Grand Re-Opening Celebration on Saturday, Dec. 1 under the guidance of new owner Lora Terry.

Terry purchased the popular Downtown Hillsville business on Oct. 1 from original proprietor Lauren Chitwood, who had operated the business on 211 N. Main Street for six years. On Nov. 8, Terry was joined by friends and family as she cut the ribbon in celebration of ownership of the business. The event was sponsored by the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce. Country Formals will continue to offer wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, prom dresses and tuxedos in addition to expanded offerings in Christmas items, gifts, toys and more.

Terry left a 28-year career with the Virginia Farm Bureau to become the new proprietor of Country Formals & Gifts.

“We just wanted to be able to come back to area. We thank the Chitwoods for being able to stay in the community and start this business,” she said. “I think this is a God thing. I am very blessed to be able to do this and to stay home at the same time. I look forward to serving the people of Hillsville and Carroll County.”

Terry’s husband, Ed, is equally excited about the new venture. He’s particularly happy she will no longer be on the road most of the time and working the long hours she was required to put in while traveling throughout the region with Virginia Farm Bureau.

“I’m excited to have Lora off the road and I’m happy to have her home,” he said.

Lora said she’s been taken aback by how helpful other Hillsville business owners have been in helping her get started. People like Robert Cloud and others have been so gracious to help, she said. Considering that, she said the business wants to give back to them as many area businesses will be invited to take part in the Dec. 1 Grand Re-Opening Celebration, which will also be a “mini-bridal show,” Terry said. The celebration will take place on the same day as Hillsville’s Christmas Parade, so the Terrys are hopeful it will offer many citizens a chance to check them out that day.

“We have casual dresses as well. For the grand re-opening, one of the bridal companies is giving us a bridal gown to give away. It’s a size 6, so if it doesn’t fit we can exchange it out for a Jasmine dress,” Lora Terry said. “We will also be offering a $50 gas card and a $50 gift certificate. Jasmine is offering a bridal gown, Highland Rugs will be here and other businesses and we will be doing a drawing every hour on the hour.”

Everything in the store will be 10 percent off that day except for tuxedos and bridal gowns, Terry said.

Why don’t countries like us?
Ever wonder which countries hate the United States the most. We are hated by a lot of countries, but we really can’t help it. We were just born with a strong personality and, quite possibly, a bi-polar disorder. Nevertheless, we are hated, that’s for sure. Either other countries want us to stay ...

I was reading an article entitled “The Nine Most Common Airplane Accidents” and was quiet surprised that crashing and exploding into a massive ball of flame was not among them. You see, when I fly, that’s what I expect to happen. Now, I know that flying is safer than driving a car, at least th...
