FANCY GAP, Va. — Three fatalities have been confirmed by Virginia State Police, with a fourth fatality reported but not confirmed, in a pile-up involving 75 vehicles on I-77. Emergency and fire crews are on the scene of the incident, which happened about 1 p.m. at the six-mile marker, just south of the Fancy Gap exit.
Twenty-five patients have been transported to area hospitals, and multiple wreckers are on the scene.
Virginia State Police Sgt. Mike Conroy said fog was a major contributing factor in the incident.
In addition, it is being reported by other media outlets that two school buses are being used to transport people from the scene who are not injured or whose injuries are minor.
Medic helicopters have landed on I-77 south of the wreck, with Surry fire units being used to set up the landing zones, and a helicopter landed at Brintle Truck Stop on N.C. 89 in Surry County as well.
According to 911 radio communications, there was a tractor-trailer on fire at the six-mile marker with the fire spreading to other vehicles. Also, numerous patients with injuries have been reported.
I-77 northbound is closed from exit 1 just north of the North Carolina state line to the Hillsville exit, while southbound is closed from Fort Chiswell exit to exit 1, which is about a 30-mile stretch.
